Everyone knows airline pricing is based on supply and demand. Fares are more expensive during peak travel seasons like summer and to prime destinations like European capitals capitals .

So if a flight to Rome costs more than a flight to Milan , you’d think that demand for Rome must be higher or supply lower. What’s puzzling is that you can pay a high price to a given destination but a dramatically lower price for the exact same fight if you agree to go on to another destination.Take Alitalia to Rome ,for instance ,for travel in August .A round-trip , economy flight directly to Rome leaving JFK at 10:05 p.m. on Alitalia 611 on August 5 costs $1,655 when booked on April 30.

Compare that to $903 for a round-trip ,economy ticket to Milan (stopping in Rome ) leaving JEK on the exact same Alitalia 611 flight at 10:05 p.m. on August 5. So why is Alitalia willing to fly you to Rome for $752 less than it would otherwise ,plus give you an extra one-and-a-half-hour flight to Milan?Airlines have increased their profitability in recent year by segmenting the market for air travel and charging customers different prices for the same product .

In this case, the market is segmented based on demand for direct fights. Airlines know most people prefer the shortest route to their destination , so they make customers pay up for the privilege of flying direct . (They also make it a little more inconvenient if you don’t pay up for a direct flight , in order to encourage you to fly direct.)When prices become so obviously illogical ,it may be time to revisit why air tickets can’t be transferred or resold just like any other normal product . If the airlines are entitled to exploit the free market ,shouldn't customers be allowed to do the same thing?
According to the example, how much should you pay if you fly to Milan from JFK and stop in Rome midway?
A.
$752 for a one-way, economy ticket.
B.
$827 for a one-way, economy ticket.
C.
$903 for a one-way, economy ticket.
D.
$1,655 for a one-way, economy ticket.

At last, GM bags Daewoo Motor. But Hynix eludes capture THE government is desperate to sell the most troubled of South Korea's big companies to foreigners. This, ministers believe, is the best way to accelerate the corporate restructuring begun in the wake of the Asian financial crisis in 1997, and to clear the way for more sustainable economic growth. This week, after months of on-off talks with foreign suitors, the government's plans moved a big step forward, and then an equally big step back. On April 30th General Motors (GM) signed a contract to buy the bankrupt Daewoo Motor. But on the same day, the board of Hynix, a cash-strapped memory-chip giant, shocked the markets by rejecting a proposed takeover by Micron Technology, an American competitor. Micron had offered to pay about $3.4 billion for Hynix's core memory business, and to take a minority stake in the non-memory arm. Analysts predict that the government will put pressure on creditors to rescue a deal with Micron or seek a new buyer, as liquidation is too risky to contemplate in an election year. GM's deal with Daewoo Motor marks the end of an even longer and more painful process. Ford almost bought the car maker two years ago, but pulled out after deciding that Daewoo would be too hard to turn round. GM had been talking with Daewoo for over a year. It has agreed to buy two of the company's four domestic car plants, a factory in Vietnam, a parts unit in the Netherlands and nine overseassales arms (all in Europe except one, in Puerto Rico of all places). Between them, the two domestic factories can churn out a combined 530,000 cars and 30,000 commercial vehicles a year. GM has struck a good deal. Together with various undisclosed partners, it will hold a 67% stake in a new company, tentatively named GM-Daewoo. The American car maker will pay $251m for its own stake of 42%, but it will also assume $573m of Daewoo Motor's debts. The acquisition is a key part of GM's global expansion. The company has been trying to strengthen its foothold in Asia for some time. Buying a presence in South Korea was seen as particularly urgent, since imports account for only 3% of the 1.5m cars sold in the country each year. GM hopes to use Daewoo's production lines to make budget cars that will be sold under the Daewoo brand in most markets. But GM has much work to do to rebuild Daewoo's damaged brand image and domestic market share, which hovers around 10% after reaching a high of 37% in 1998. GM has to fill holes in product lines by introducing sport-utility and multi-purpose vehicles, says Nick Reilly, former chief executive of Vauxhall, GM's British subsidiary, and chief-executive-designate of GM-Daewoo now that he has sealed the deal. His management team can expect trouble from South Korea's aggressive unions along the way. In a sign of things to come, the signing ceremony was moved to a secret location after a group of union activists occupied the hotel where it was due to take place.
Why did Ford give up the acquisition of Daewoo Motor?
A.
It is difficult to be handed over to Ford.
B.
It is difficult to be changed for better.
C.
It is difficult to ask for agreement.
D.
It is difficult to realize the tricky terms.

For the past seventy-five years,Mexico’s oil and gas reserves have been a highly-coveted but untouchable resource that private energy companies could only dream of tapping.

That changed late last year, when lawmakers passed watershed legislation that did away with the state oil monopoly and allowed production sharing with the private sector.

Soon, foreign companies will be able to bring in best-in-class technology and know-how that the country urgently needs to tap both its deep-water and shale fields, with the goal of wresting Mexico’s energy industry out of state of persistent decline. While that’s a big deal in and of itself,it’s not even close to the whole story,The potential impact of the energy bill and other recently passed reforms promises something much greater than that
nothing short of a wholesale paradigm shift for Mexico’s economy.

The energy legislation could increase annual real GDP growth by an average of 0.7 percentage points between 2015 and 2018,according to the government.Add that to the impact of other recent reforms to the labor market, telecommunications sector and financial industry, and potential real GDP growth could be 1.7 percentage points higher
some 4.5 percent per year over the medium term.If that happens, the reforms will clearly benefit the whole population.

Expected contribution to potential annual GDP growth in 2015-2015 by
reform medium term.If that happens, the reforms will clearly benefit the whole population.

Expected contribution to potential annual GDP growth in 2015-2015 by reform percentage points

How exactly will the energy reform boost growth? At the most basic level,it could increase oil output to as much as 3.5 million barrels per day by 2025.That would be a dramatic turnaround:Mexico’s daily output has fallen from 3.3 million barrels per day in 2004 to just 2.5 million today due to a combination of depletion of current fields and significant underinvestment.By inviting multinationals in to explore deep water fields in the Gulf of Mexico as well as shale areas along the U.S.-Mexico border, the country could attract new foreign direct investment of some $10 billion a year. And that, the government hopes, could create 2.5 million new direct and indirect jobs by 2025.
The government expects that______.
A.
the whole story of Mexico will be influenced by the reforms
B.
Mexico’s economy will welcome a wholesale paradigm shift
C.
the energy bill and other reforms will help attract more investment
D.
annual GDP will grow by an average of 0.7%between 2015 and 2018

From: Tonas Woods
Subject: Summer class
Date: August 25
Dear Mr. Beckman,
I attended one of your new classes this year, and I wanted to share with you some thoughts on my experience. While I enjoyed the course overall and found Elaine Sourden to be a seasoned instructor, I felt that the one class really should have been divided into two separate sections---one for beginners and one for students who already have some painting experience. Of the fifteen students in the class, eight were beginners and required most of the instructors attention.
Unfortunately, that meant that the more experienced students received less of the promised  individual attention than I had hoped. Ms. Sourden led the group to three different locations that provided beautiful scenery from which to work, but much of her time was spent helping the novice students with the basics of how to set up.
I hope this information helps in your planning for next year. I would seriously consider taking a second class next year but would want to be sure that the instruction was appropriate to my skill level.
Sincerely,
Jonas Woods

When did Mr. Woods most likely attend the Pentiction Art Center?
A.
From June 6 to 10
B.
From June 20 to 24
C.
From July 11 to 25
D.
From August 4 to 8

People have been painting pictures for at least30,000 years. The earliest pictures were painted bypeople who hunted animals. They used to paintpictures of the animals they wanted to catch and kill.Pictures of this kind have been found on the walls ofcaves in France and Spain. No one knows why theywere painted there. Perhaps the painters thoughtthat their pictures would help them to catch theseanimals. Or perhaps human beings have always wanted to tell stories in pictures.About 5,000 years ago, the Egyptians and other people in the Near East began to use picturesas kind of writing. They drew simple pictures or signs to represent things and ideas, and also torepresent the sounds of their language. The signs these people used became a kind ofalphabet.The Egyptians used to record information and to tell stories by putting picture writingand pictures together. When an important person died, scenes and stories from his life werepainted and carved on the walls of the place where he was buried. Some of these pictures arelike modern comic strip stories. It has been said that Egypt is the home of the comic strip.But, for the Egyptians, pictures still had magic power. So they did not try to make their way ofwriting simple. The ordinary people could not understand it.By the year 1,000 BC, people who lived in the area around the Mediterranean Sea haddeveloped a simpler system of writing. The signs they used were very easy to write, and therewere fewer of them than in the Egyptian system. This was because each sign, or letter,represented only one sound in their language. The Greeks developed this system and formedthe letters of the Greek alphabet. The Romans copied the idea, and the Roman alphabet isnow used all over the world.These days, we can write down a story, or record information, without using pictures. But westill need pictures of all kinds: drawing, photographs, signs and diagrams. We find themeverywhere: in books and newspapers, in the street, and on the walls of the places where welive and work. Pictures help us to understand and remember things more easily, and they canmake a story much more interesting.?

My surprise over the past few winters has been the personality transformation my parents go through around mid-December as they change from Dad and Mom into Grandpa and Grandma. Yes, they become grandparents and are completely different from the people I know the other eleven and a half months of the year. The first sign of my parentschange is the delight they take in visiting toy and childrens clothing stores. These two people, who usually dislike anything having to do with shopping malls, become crazy consumers. While they tell me to budget my money and shop wisely, they are buying up every doll and dump truck in sight. And this is only the beginning of the holidays! When my brothers children arrive, Grandpa and Grandma come into full form. First they throw out all ideas about a balanced diet for the grandkids. While we were raised in a house where everyone had to take two bites of corn, beets(甜菜), or liver (foods that appeared quite often on our table despite constant complaining), the grandchildren never have to eat anything that does not appeal to them. Grandma carries chocolate in her pockets to bribe(贿赂)the littlest ones into following her around the house, while Grandpa offers surprisesof candy and cake to them all day long. Boxes of chocolate-pie disappear while the whole-wheat bread get hard and stale. The kids love all the sweets, and when the sugar raises their energy levels, Grandma and Grandpa can always decide to leave and do a bit more shopping or go to bed while my brother and sister-in-law try to deal with their highly active kids. Once the grandchildren have arrived, Grandma and Grandpa also seem to forget all of the responsibility lectures I so often hear in my daily life. If Mickey screams at his sister during dinner, he is developing his own personality; if Nancy breaks Grandmas mirror, she is just a curious child. But, if I track mud into the house while helping to unload groceries, I become careless; if I scold one of the grandkids for tearing pages out of my textbook, I am impatient. If Paula talks back to her mother, Grandma and Grandpa smile at her spirit. If I say one word about all of this excessive love, Mom and Dad reappear to have a talk with me about petty jealousies.
It can be inferred from the passage that when the author was a child, he .
A.
liked the foods he had
B.
got a lot of pocket money
C.
was spoiled by his parents
D.
was scolded if he misbehaved

The consensus forecast is chat the economy expanded a: an annual rate of 2.9 percent, according to a survey of economists. That would mark a dramatic rebound from the January --March period, when the economy shrank at an annual rate of 2.9 percent. It was the biggest contraction since the depths of the recession five years ago.Normally, such a plunge in economic activity would arouse fears about a recession. But analysts have largely dismissed this year's stumble as the result of a set of adverse developments that should be temporary.
According to the passage, what might have aroused fears about recession?
A.
The economy's continuous growth.
B.
Adverse developments of economy.
C.
Economists' positive expectation.
D.
The economy's great contraction.

How will the energy reform boost growth?
A.
A lot of positions will be created.
B.
Foreign direct investment will be attracted.
C.
It will increase oil output.
D.
All of the above.
